Biography & Genealogy:Clifton H. Smith, Class of 1861. Genealogy: Born- August 19, 1841, Alexandria, VA. Father- Francis Lee Smith; Mother- Sarah Gosnell Vowell. Paternal grandparents: John A. W. Smith of Warrenton, VA and Maria Love Hawkins. Maternal grandparents: John Cripps Vowell, (b. London England, d. Alexandria) and Mary Jaquelin Smith. Brother: Francis Lee Smith, Class of 1867. Marriage/children: none shown in our records. VMI Record: Matriculated from Alexandria, VA; attended for one year, 1857-1858; did not graduate. Military Record: Was residing in New Orleans when Civil War started; returned to Virginia spring 1861 and on May 24 joined staff of Brig Gen (later Gen) P.G.T. Beauregard as Assistant Adjutant General. Appointed Capt, Provisional Army of Virginia May 31, 1861 and formally assigned to Beauregard's staff. Beauregard's Assistant Adjutant General until November 1863. At Shiloh April 6, 1862 carried to Maj Gen (later Gen) B. Bragg order from Beauregard to halt attacks on the Federals. Appointed Capt PACS July 24, 1862 (date of rank February 15). Ordered to Mobile, Al November 16, 1863. On staffs of Brig Gen E. Higgins, Maj Gen D.H. Maury, and Brig Gen R.L. Page. Captured at Ft Morgan, Al August 23, 1864. Held at New Orleans, La. In US hospital, St Louis, Missouri October 1864 (fever). Held at Fts Lafayette and Columbus, New York. Released on oath June 10, 1865. Post-war: Merchant in New Orleans; stockbroker in New York. Died- January 27, 1902 in New York, New York. Buried Presbyterian Cemetery, Alexandria, Virginia
