Biography & Genealogy: | William Madison Peyton Jr., Class of 1861: Born- February 10, 1839. Matriculated from Big Lick (now Roanoke). At VMI 1 year, 1 month. Working in New York when war began. Military Record: Returned south and entered service at Camp Martin, Kentucky January 17, 1862. On that day elected 1st Lt, Company K, 5th Kentucky. Became Acting Aide-de-camp to Brig Gen J.S. Williams April 1862 (formally appointed May 1, 1862). Transferred from regiment to staff as 1st Lt, Aide-de-camp September 20, 1862. Appointed brigade inspector May 1863. Transferred Octobebr 1864 to staff of Brig Gen J.W. Echols. Acting Inspector General January 1865. Paroled Greensboro, North Carolina April 30, 1865. Unoffical source says sightly wounded in (unarmed) skirmish in Tennessee. Post War Career: Engineer. Died- Septembebr 25, 1901. |
