|Biography & Genealogy:||Roswell Sparks Majette, Class of 1861 (graduated 17 out of 17): Born- May 15, 1841 Matriculated from Newsoms Depot, Va. At VMI 5 years (repeated sophomore year). Military Record: Drill Master, Richmond spring 1861. Commissioned 2nd Lt, Provisional Army of Virginia May 1861. Attached to Company D, 6th Virginia as Drill Master. Probably the man who enlisted at Camp Grice February 18, 1862 for 1 year as Private, Company H, 5th Virginia Cavalry (12 months). Present for duty through June 1862 (all on file). Enlisted February 13, 1864 at Garysburg, North Carolina for 3 years or war as Private, Company D, 8th (Col J. Dearing's) CS Cavalry. Unit became Company I, 24th Virginia Cavalry. April-August 1864 roll shows absent sick. Captured near Somerton March 4, 1865. Held at Point Lookout, Maryland. Released on oath June 15, 1865. Post War Career: Farmer; merchant. Died- Oakland, Va August 11, 1900.|
