Ellis, daughter of John Henry Ellis of Sussex Co. Va. Children- 1 daughter- Mrs. George R. Drew (given name unknown, though it seems her husband George may have been a distant relative of her grandmother). Entered VMI- Aug. 27, 1857; Resigned after 1 year. Civil War Service- Enlisted Apr. 20, 1861 as Private in Co. E of the 5th Va. Cavalry; Transferred to Co. C Mar. 7, 1862; promoted to Sgt. May 5, 1862; His unit became Co. E of the 16th Va. Cavalry, then Co. H of the 13th Va. Cavalry; was at Camp Lee until assigned to Co. A of the 13th Va. Cavalry Feb. 10, 1864; AWOL July-Aug. 1864; Listed as deserter Jan. 23, 1865. Careers- Farmer and merchant. Died- Jan. 18, 1885.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era.
