Biography & Genealogy: | James Elliot Heath, Class of 1861: Born- August 1841. Matriculated from Eastville, Va. At VMI 1 year 1 month. Dismissed from VMI for "maltreatment" of new cadets. At UVa 1860-61. Military Career: Possibly the "James E. Heath" who served April 1861 as Sgt, Capt E.S. Hutter's '59 Company Va Vols (Southern Guard). Unofficial source says briefly with CS forces in Northampton County (possibly 27th Va Militia). Unit disbanded after Federals occupied Eastern Shore. "Conditions prevented my crossing the Chesapeake Bay and joining the Confederate army," he wrote later. Post War Career: Became Commonwealth's Attorny in Norfolk; later a judge. Died- November 23, 1904 in Norfolk, Va. Buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery there. |
