Biography & Genealogy: | John Thomas Hamlett, Class of 1861: Born- July 27, 1839. Matriculated from Henry Court House, Va. At VMI 3 1/2 months. Dismissed from VMI for neglect of duty or as he put it, "general devilment of all sorts." Military Record: Enlisted June 5, 1861 at Lynchburg for 1 year as Private, Company H, 24th Va. In hospital May 1861. Detailed as courier for Brig Gen (later Maj Gen) J.L. Kemper September 11, 1862. Transferred to Company B, 32nd Battalion Va Cav February 3, 1863. 1st Sergeant spring 1863. Transferred to CS Navy September 3, 1863. Unofficial sources say served at Charleston, SC; Wilmington, NC; and Drewry's Bluff, but no official record of navy service found. Post War Career: Lived at Wytheville. Lawyer. Represented Charlotte and Prince Edward counties in Va Senate 1869-71. Died- Died in CS Soldiers' Home April 8, 1912 in Richmond, Va. |
