Biography & Genealogy:John Harmer Gilmer, Jr., Class of 1861: Born- December 25, 1840. Matriculated from Richmond, Va. At VMI 1 year and 1 month. Studied law with John Brockenbrough in Lexington 1860-61. Military Career: Appointed 2nd Lt, Provisional Army of Virginia. Served at camp of instruction with Col W. Gilham. Then drillmaster, 5th Va Battalion. Volunteer aide-de-camp to Brig Gen H.A. Wise. Assigned to 59th Va. Appointed acting 2nd Lt, 1st CS Engineers May 1863. To Lt, engineers October 27, 1863. Assigned to engineer troops with Maj Gen H. Heth's division. Appointed 2nd Lt, 1st CS Engineers April 1864 (Date of rank March 29, 1864). In hospital (Richmond) summer-fall 1864 (last report on file). Paroled Richmond April 21, 1865. Post War Career: Lawyer Died- August 31, 1869 in Richmond, Va. and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery there.
