Biography & Genealogy: | William Eyre Gibson, Class of 1861: Born- Augst 23, 1841. Matriculated from Richmond, Va. At VMI 1 year and 1 month. Military Career: Entered US Military Academy 1859. Stood 20th of 48 in Class of 1863 when he resigned April 22, 1861. Appointed CS Cadet July 29, 1861 to report to Gen Joseph E. Johnston. Ordered to South Carolina December 7, 1861. Joined Company C, 15th Battalion SC Artillery (Maj J.J. Lucas's Battalion) December 17, 1861. Soon detached for duty at Fort Sumter. Appointed 2nd Lt Artillery, PACS September 1862 (DOR August 24). Assigned to Company H, 13th Texas, a mixed coast defense regiment that included artillery and cavalry companies (Col J. Bates' Regiment; Brazoria Coast Regiment). To Captain February 10 (or 11), 1863. Company became 16th Texas Field Battery (Capt W.E. Gibson's Company) January 1864. To Richmond on leave February 1865. Applied for transfer to ordnance duty in Army of Northern Virginia. Given temporary asssignment March 3, 1865 as Ordnance Officer, Maj F. Hugher's Artillery Battalion, Army of Northern Virginia. On list of POWs paroled at Farmville April 11-21, 1865. Post War Career: Bookkeeper; miner; farmer. Died- February 23, 1877 in Pioche, Nevada. |
