Father- David Coltrane; Mother- Hannah (maiden name unknown) No information on grandparents. Married- Margaret Catherine Umbarger, daughter of Andrew Umbarger of Wythe Co. Va. on March 31, 1869. Children- Three sons and three daughters- names unknown. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 7, 1857; Graduated July 4, 1861 standing 9th in a class of 17. Military Record: Drill Master for VMI Corps of Cadets in spring of 1861; enlisted in the Provisional Army of Va. April 19, 1861, then enlisted into Confederate service June 30, 1861 as 2nd Lieut. for Co. E, 1st Va. Battalion; Acting Adjutant Feb. 1862; Commended for First Kernstown; on leave in second half of 1862, but served as volunteer on staff of Col. J. H. Lane at Cedar Mountain where he commanded a company of the 28th NC Infantry; promoted to 1st Lieut. Oct. 11, 1862; AWOL12/31/1862; present in arrest Jan/Feb. 1863; court-martialed for allowing prisoner to escape; elected Captain of Co. C, 24th Va. Infantry Dec. 10, 1864; Appointed on March 11, 1865; Captured at Sayler's Creek on April 6, 1865; held at Johnson's Island, Ohio until released on oath June 18, 1865. Careers: Farmer; manufacturer.
