|Biography & Genealogy:||John Brownlow Coakley was the son of Daniel Suthard Coakley and Susan Alexander. He was born at Hartwood, Stafford County, Virginia on June 29, 1838. He entered the Virginia Military Institute on July 23, 1857 and resigned due to academic deficiencies on July 8, 1858. He studied at Hampden-Sydney College (VA) in 1858-1859 and subsequently received a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in March 1861. Soon thereafter he entered the Confederate Army as a Surgeon, and was assigned to the Richmond hospitals. He later was assigned to Gen. Cobb's Georgia Legion, to Capt. T. R. Thornton's Company of Virginia Light Artillery, and to Col. C. E. Lightfoot's artillery battalion. He was paroled at Appomattox. After the war Coakley practiced medicine in Richmond, VA until he moved to Buffalo, NY in September 1880, where he lived until his death on June 4, 1921. He married Sarah Tew on October 7, 1875. They had one son and two daughters: Morgan, Elizabeth, and Gilbertine.|
