Pat. Grandfather- Hon. Joseph Bryan; Pat. Grandmother- Delia Forman. Mat. Grandfather- Judge John Coulter; Mat. Grandmother- Frances Bland Tucker. Married- Margaret Randolph Minor, daughter of William N. Minor and Mary Waters Terrell. Children- 1- John Randolph Bryan, III; 2- Mary Waters Bryan, who married Dr. John J. Hitchcock; 3- Elizabeth Coulter Bryan; 4- Evelyn Bryan, who married Dr. James B. Bullett; 5- Margaret Randolph Bryan, who married Robert L. Williston; 6- Dr. William Minor Bryan; 7- Isabel J. Bryan; 8- Joseph Bryan, who died in infancy. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Sept. 22, 1857; Dismissed Sept. 23, 1858 for refusing to go to dress parade after being given a direct order by Acting Supt. Preston. Civil War Record: Appointed as civilian, chief clerk at headquarters of Maj. Gen. J. B. Magruder in late 1861; also volunteer aide-de-camp to Magruder; made three ascentions in a hot air observation balloon for Gen. J. E. Johnston in late 1862, giving him the nickname "Balloon Bryan"; Seems to have served in some capacity on staff of Maj. Gen. J. B. Magruder from Dec. 1862- April 1863, but no official appointments are recorded; Employed as clerk to Maj. J. H. Lacy June 1- Nov. 20, 1863; applied for field duty May, 1864; served as assistant Quarter Master in Charlottesville, Va. Feb. 1865. Careers: Planter; realtor. Died- Dec. 27, 1917 in Richmond Va. Buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va.|
