Father- William Williams born near Dublin, Ireland; Mother- Margaret Gillespie of Tazewell Co. Va. Married- Sallie Woods George, daughter of Col. William O. George. Children- 1- Oscar G. Williams; 2- William E. Williams; 3- Eleanor Williams, who became Mrs. Smith; 4- Woodie Williams, who became Mrs. Sealock; 5- Emmett V. Williams; 6- Casper H. Williams; 7- Arthur G. Williams; 8- Fay Williams, who became Mrs. Morrow. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 23, 1855; Graduated July 4, 1859 standing 24th in a class of 29. Military Record: Appointed Major of 37th Va. Infantry April 21, 1861; seems to have been Lt. Col by May 1862; promoted to Col. Aug. 16, 1862; Praised for conduct at First Kernstown, First Winchester and Cedar Mountain; Wounded in action at Cedar Mountain; wounded again May 3, 1863 at Chancellorsville, and again June 2, 1864 at Cold Harbor; Paroled at Appomattox where he commanded Brig. Gen. W. Terry's brigade. Careers: Teacher; Physician; received medical education in Richmond, Va. After Civil War, practiced medicine in Edinburgh, Missouri from 1877 until 1904 when he suffered a paralyzing stroke. Died- May 7, 1908 from a second stroke while at the home of his son Emmett in Valerie, Iowa. |
