| Biography & Genealogy: | Wilfred Emory Cutshaw, Class of 1858: Born- Jan. 25 1838. Matriculated from Harpers Ferry, WV. At VMI 4 years. Military Record: Appointed 1st Lieutenant, Provisional Army of Virginia on May 4, 1861; 1st Lieutenant, Regular Army of the Confederate States, October 31, 1861; Artillery and engineer duty on Peninsula and with Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) T. J. Jackson in Valley; Appointed Captain in March, 1862, and commanded a Light Artillery Company under Jackson; Severely wounded in the left knee and captured on May 25 1862 near Winchester; Paroled Aug. 8, 1862; Assistant Commandant of Cadets and Assistant Instructor of Tactics at VMI 1862-63; Arrested in lower Valley by Federals on April 17, 1863 on the grounds that he "is well posted as to the number of our troops at Winchester and Berryville and other points." Held at Ft. McHenry, Maryland and Ft. Monroe; Exchanged on May 5, 1863 and found unfit for duty for 90 days; Returned to duty in September of 1863 as Inspector General, II Artillery Corps, Army of Northern Virginia; Promoted to Major on Feb. 27, 1864 to command Lieutenant Colonel R. A. Hardaway's artillery battalion; Wounded in action (lost his right leg) and captured on Apr. 6, 1865 at Sayler's Creek. Post War Career: Civil Engineer; Teacher in Loudon County and Hampton 1858-61; on VMI Faculty as a Colonel, Assistant Commandant of Cadets and Assistant Professor of Math; 1869 as Assistant Professor of Physics; 1870 as Assistant Professor of Physics and Math; 1871-72 as Assistant Professor of Civil and Military Engineering; Elected City Engineer of Richmond in 1873, holding that post for 34 years and playing a major role in rebuilding the city; Married first to Mrs. E.S. Norfleet in 1876, later to Miss M. W. Morton in 1890; President of the VMI Alumni Association; Mason; Confederate Memorial Literary Association; Army of Northern Virginia Association; Lee Monument Association. Died- Dec. 19, 1907 in Richmond, buried in Holywood Cemetery in Richmond. |
