Biography & Genealogy: | Samuel L. Howard, Class of 1912. Genealogy & early history: Born March 3, 1889 in Washington, DC; Father- Clement W. Howard (b. 1845, d. 1907, Washington DC). Mother - Addie M. Lutz, b. Washington DC. Paternal Grandparents - William E. Howard and Hannah [maiden name unknown]. Maternal Grandparents - Francis A. Lutz and Mary [Fullalore] of Washington DC. Before attending VMI went to Woodberry Forest (VA) School. Graduated VMI 1912. Career: Marine Corps Officer (Lt. Gen); commissioned 2nd Lt., USMC in 1914; served at sea during World War I; stationed in Washinigton DC with the Navy from 1934-1938; in 1941 assumed command of the Fourth Marine Regiment; was commander of all beach defenses on Corregidor when it was surrended May 6, 1942; Japanese POW for almost 4 years, liberated in 1945; after the war commanded 1st Marine Division in China (1946-1947) and served as inspector general of the Marine Corps from 1950 until his retirement on April 1, 1953. Marriage: To Marianna Gray; 2 daughters, Nancy and Mary Elizabeth. Death: October 12, 1960 at Bethesda Naval Hospital; buried Arlington National Cemetery. |
