Biography & Genealogy:Joseph Christopher Wheelwright, Class of 1867. New Market Cadet: "Died on the Field of Honor". Genealogy: Born- Sept. 26, 1846 in Westmoreland Co. Va. Father- Dr. Frederick D. Wheelwright; Mother- Maria L. (maiden name unknown) No information on grandparents. Never married, no children. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 29, 1863. Civil War Record: Private in Co. C. of the VMI Corps of Cadets during the Battle of New Market. Mortally wounded in action there. Died- June 2, 1864 in Harrisonburg, Va. from effects of wounds received at the Battle of New Market. Buried at VMI with other New Market Cadets beneath the statue of "Virginia Mourning Her Dead".

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century.
