Father- John Garland Jefferson; Mother- Otelia Mansfield Howlett. Paternal grandparents: John Garland Jefferson and Mary Ann "Nancy" Booker. Maternal grandparents- unknown. Cadet Jefferson was the great-great nephew of President Thomas Jefferson.VMI Record: Matriculated on August 1, 1863; New Market Cadet, Private, Co. B., mortally wounded at the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864; died May 18, 1864, in New Market, Va. He is buried beneath the New Market Monument at VMI.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century.
