Biography & Genealogy: | Moses Jacob Ezekiel, Class of 1866: New Market Cadet; Private, Co. C. Genealogy: Born- October 28, 1844 in Richmond, Va. Father- Jacob Ezekiel; Mother- Catherine de Castro. Pat. Grandfather- Ezekiel Jacob Ezekiel; Pat. Grandmother- Rebecca Israel. Mat. Grandfather- Jacob de Castro; mat. Grandmother- Hannah Pepper. Never married. Matriculated at VMI from Richmond, VA. At VMI 4 years. Military Record: served as a Private, Company C, at New Market with the VMI Corps of Cadets; Cadet Sergeant 1864-65; elected 2d Lieutenant, Company G, Colonel J.G. Tucker's Confederate States Regiment (1st Foreign Battalion) on Nov. 18, 1864, but he declined the position; served with VMI Corps of Cadets in Richmond trenches until it was disbanded on April 2, 1865. Post War Career: unofficial source says he studied anatomy at the Medical College of Virginia; moved to Europe in 1869, eventually settling in Rome, Italy; known for several Civil-War related works in the United States including the Confederate Monument located at the site of the Prisioner of War camp at Johnson's Island, Ohio; statue of Lieutenant General T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson at Charleston, West Virginia (replica at VMI); gateway to Confederate Cemetery at Hickman, Kentucky; and "Virginia Mourning her Dead" at VMI; helped organize American-Italian Relief Committee during World War I; most likely VMI's first Jewish cadet; Mason. Died- March 27, 1917 in Rome, Italy; buried in Arlington National Cemetery near the Confederate Monument (another of his works and the one he regarded as his masterpiece). |
