Biography & Genealogy: | Benjamin Franklin Ficklin, Class of 1849: Genealogy: Born- Dec. 18, 1827, in Albemarle Co., Va. Father- Benjamin Ficklin; Mother- Eleanor Slaughter. Grandparents: unknown. Never married, no children. Matriculated to VMI from Charlottesville, VA. At VMI 3 years (dismissed for various pranks, including firing a cannon with a blank charge at barracks). Pre War Career: Served as a Corporal with the 1st Virginia in the Mexican War (Wounded in Action), then returned to VMI to graduate; taught in Abingdon, VA; one of the founders of the Pony Express. Military Record: Served as a Captain with the Quartermaster Department from 1861-62; appointed Lieutenant Colonel, 45th Virginia, in July 1861, but declined the position; blockade runner (on ships Virginia, Coquette, Giraffe) and Confederate purchasing agent in Europe. Post War Career: teacher; express business; stagecoach and mail operations. Died- May 10, 1871, in Georgetown, Washington D.C. after doctor cut artery attempting to remove a fish bone from his throat; Buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Charlottesville, VA.
