Biography & Genealogy: | Luther Cary Haynes, Class of 1867. New Market Cadet, "Died on the Field of Honor." Born- Feb. 11, 1845. Father- William Corbin Haynes; Mother- Maria Street. Paternal grandparents- W. Anthony Haynes and Fanny Throckmorton. Maternal grandparents - George W. Street and Elizabeth [maiden name unknown]. Never married, no children. Entered VMI- Nov. 10, 1863. Civil War Service- Private in Co. B. of the Corps of Cadets at the Battle of New Market (May 15, 1864). Seriously wounded in action at New Market and died as a result of these wounds approximately one month later in the hospital housed at old Powhatan Hotel in Richmond, Va; Buried at family home "Sunny Side", Essex Co., VA; grave is unmarked. |
