| Biography & Genealogy: | Hullihen Walter Qarrier, Class of 1862: Born- 1841. Matriculated from Wheeling, Va (now WV). At UVa 1860-61. At VMI 24 days. Military Record: Unofficial source says served in "Southern Guard" (UVa student company) April 1861 as substitute for roomate. Enlisted May 27 1861 at Richmond for 1 year as Private, Company K, 1st Va Artillery (Capt L.F. Jone's Company; 2nd Company, Richmond Howitzers). (Some records show enlistment at Yorktown.) Appointed Cadet, Reserve Army Confederate States, July 24, 1862 as temporary 2nd Lt, Reserve Army Confederate States, Capt T.J. Page's Company Va Light Artillery (Madison Light Artillery). Ordered August 29, 1862 to duty with Maj Gen J.E.B. Stuart. Served as Acting Aide-de-Camp and Aide-de-Camp. Wounded in action at Chancellorsville. Praised by Stuart as "particularly distinguished...for...coolness and valuable service" at Antietam and for "commendable zeal and credit" at Gettysburg. Appointed Capt, Provincial Army Confederate States, Adjutant General Department November 19, 1863. Assigned as Inspector and Assistant Adjutant General to cavalry brigade of Brig Gen (later Maj Gen) L.L. Lomax (brig later commanded by Brig Gen W.H. Payne '49). Wounded in action (right leg) at Tom's Brook. In hospital (Harrisonburg, Richmond). Post War Career: Episcopal clergyman. Completed theological studies and ordained priest 1868. Served briefly at Old Christ Church, Baltimore, Md. To Staunton 1872 as Rector, Trinity Church. ANVa Assistant. 5'10", dark complexion, gray eyes, brown hair. Died- April 8, 1923 in Staunton, Va. |
