Biography & Genealogy:William Roane Ruffin, Class of 1866: Born- July 3, 1845. Matriculated from Richmond, Va. At VMI 1 year, 10 months over 2 years (repeated freshman year). At Washington College 1861-62. Military Career: At VMI February 4-Ocotber 30, 1862 (dismissed for excesssive demerits) and November 10, 1862-January 7, 1864 (reinstated; later dismissed for neglect of duty). Enlisted January 16, 1864 in Richmond for 3 years of war as Private, 1st CS Engineers. To Sergeant Major at unknown date (possibly June 11). Transferred Ocotber 1, 1864 to Company C, 13th Battalion Virginia Light Artillery (Capt J.H. Chamberlayne's Battery; Capt G.S. Davidson's Battery). Elected 2nd Lt February 5, 1865 and promoted February 28 (date of rank February 5). Captured April 6, 1865 at Sayler's Creek. Held at Johnson's Island, Ohio. Released on oath June 9, 1865. Post War Career: Married Sally Walthall 1870. On UVa Board of Visitors 1882-86. Died- May 30, 1889 in Chesterfield County of tuberculosis.
